Deb Johnson, Founder and Executive Director of the Pratt Design Incubator just came back from Haiti. Four designers and one creative arts therapist traveled together to Haiti to work with the Diaspora Community Services – Centre Medico Social du Port au Prince. The clinic has become a hub for the community of Avenue Poupelard, one of the poorest areas in the city.

The Incubator is currently working on a project for UNESCO's cultural division to develop a "toolkit" that will help Program Specialists incorporate "human centered design" approaches into educational and arts programming centered around the prevention of HIV and AIDS. The content partners are LIna Srivastava, Ariel Muller, David Jammy and our sustainable design, graphic design and design research mentors are Richard Whitehall, Paulette Bluhm-Sauriol, Tim Wallack, Stephanie Yung and Sarah Nagle from Smart Design NYC.

Incubator team participated Green Brooklyn...Green City is a city-wide event attracting residents from all five boroughs to a full day fair and symposium at Brooklyn Borough Hall.

Dr. Sam Sia heads “Sia Lab” a Molecular and Microscale Bioengineering lab at Columbia University. Sam came to the Pratt Design Incubator for help in designing the processor for his “Lab on a Chip” HIV + AIDS testing device for remote areas in Subsaharan Africa.

Four students from Pratt have been working on the final design - Sahar Ghaheri, Ashley Thornfinnson, John Chaich, Chui Ping Chui under the guidance of Pratt Alumni Kristina Drury. Additional members of the UNESCO design team included; Allegra De Angelo, Laura Senkevitch, Robbie Patrick, Esin Arsan
The project is slated to be launched in 53 offices world wide in September 2010 with the hopes on encouraging the use of Arts and Creativity to educate people about safer sex.
