Honu Pack Systems

Honu Pack Systems is developing a modular backpack concept for medical field work in remote areas, as well as for hobbyists with diverse interests.  The pack design is based on a low-cost frame, sized to fit the user, and a series of soft bag components specifically tailored for distinct uses.  By utilizing a shared platform, the overall cost and material usage of owning multiple bags, each suited for a different task, are greatly diminished.  This sustainable attribute is at the core of the pack concept, as well as the core of the mission of the company.  By considering production methods, materials choices and designing-out extraneous components the goal of Honu is to make bags more useful and more sustainable.

The Pratt Design Incubator has helped Honu in a variety of distinct ways.  Housed in a warehouse space in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the Incubator is both physically and socially inspiring.  Being next to like-minded entrepreneurs gives the support and motivation these grads need to sustain their efforts and propel the company forward.  Also, the opportunity to meet with experienced mentors who have walked the same road before gives them the perspective and guidance needed at this nascent juncture of the company’s development.

Honu plans on building itself into a sustainable entity that provides carrying solutions to people in a variety of ways.  While the company is still in the early development stages of its efforts, it is clear that the potential exists to create an organization that aids people with carrying solutions to help others, as well as to widen the discussion regarding general backpack design and its potential to make lives easier.
